Well, to start, the Tunze bags were out of stock when I was placing an order :). I may have given it a couple more runs otherwise. Not sure.

However, since it was out of stock, I got to thinking that I'm also having a bit of trouble with some little algae blooms that I would like to associate with the overdosing of aminos. I do use a couple components of Fauna Marin's Ultralith system, but not the whole system. The ingredients on the various FM aminos overlap some of the additions listed on Tunze's salt mix: aspartic acid, glycine, L-leucine, to name a few, so was wondering if switching to a salt without any organic additives, in addition to cutting back on dosing, will help get rid of the algae blooms...

Interesting experiment. Will you be dosing vitamins in some manner? Any story behind making the change?

Just curious.

Thanks for that info Matt. Great to know!

Tunze sack: 17.6 lbs. makes 63.4 USgal
RC sack: 14 lbs. makes 50.0 USgal

That's the same.

So if I've done correctly, that's $1.52 per v. $1.07?

Note: I recently bought a bag of Instant Ocean. I found the Tunze taking a considerable time to mix to clear (more than 48 hours in one case) which I didn't really like. I also didn't really notice any considerable difference in my tank, though in all fairness the majority was used during setup / cycle. Another deciding factor was vitamins - I am going to try going with a salt that *doesn't* add these for a while.

Late post, but thought I'd point out that 2.5 cups (20 oz.) is exactly the same quantity of Reef Crystals it takes for me to mix to 1.025. Based on that, you can simply compare the $/weight of the salt.

An RC 50 gal sack* is 14 lbs according to the package and I see Marine Deport has it for $15 - $1.07/lb. According to the Tunze website, their bucket* is 32.5 lbs. and I see it for $54 at Marine Depot - $1.66/lb.

For what it's worth... :)

* I couldn't find neither the weight of a RC bucket, nor an actual bag of Tunze salt for sale to make more of an apples to apples comparison.
