StonyReef’s Pick Product - Reef Sleeve

I am always on the hunt for new products, whether it be something for reek tank maintenance or aquarium organization, or one of those niche items that makes my life easier. Some of the best investments I’ve made for my reef are the LiterMeter III & the Aquacontroller 3, but those are ‘big ticket’ items. What about the little things? I’ve wasted a decent chunk of change on items I’d like to work, but just don’t. But from time to time, I hit pay dirt and find products that I wonder how I ever lived without….

StonyReef’s Pick Product this month is the Reef Sleeve from The Filter Guys. The Reef Sleeve is a disposable, shoulder length polymer sleeve that is just outstanding for those times when you don’t want to get your hands wet. I can’t count how many times I’ve been ready to walk out the door for the morning commute, showered, shaved, coffee in hand, and noticed something in the tank that really shouldn’t wait…

Reef Sleeve from The Filter Guys

A knocked over acropora that is laying too close to some GSP. A turbo snail that pushed some frags behind the rockwork. Sure, it could wait until I get home from the office, but that GSP could take out a nice portion of the acro in the meantime. Maybe the frags behind the rockwork get pushed even further back. With the Reef Sleeve, no worries. Slide it on, take care of business, toss it and be on your way.

I was at The Filter Guys to buy a couple RO/DI fittings and saw these, and like gum at the checkout counter, bought a pack of 25 sleeves as an afterthought. I can guarantee, next time I need something from them, I’m going to add the 100 pack to my order just to have on hand. Getting hands wet before I head out to a nice dinner or the office? Re-rinsing hands 5 times a day? Things of the past.

I’m 6 foot, and it goes all the way to my shoulder. I stuck my entire arm in the tank to move something the other morning, slipped the sleeve off, set it aside, and used it that night when I came home. They’re not designed for tons of uses, I did have some live rock rip a hole in the finger, but you can likely get a couple uses out of them, depending on useage. At roughly 25 cents a pop, there is no reason to not have a pack of these on hand….

  1. I wish my LFS had these.

  2. These are a great idea. I own the Coralife Shoulder-Length Aqua Gloves but I’m only 5′7″ and they’re really to big for me. They work for target feeding and some miscellaneous stuff but for handling frags they’re a bit clumsy. Water pressure tightens the gloves but they’re still a bit too big. I sent this link to our purchasing department so they could look into these disposable versions. Thanks for sharing!

  3. I’ve seen the coralife aqua gloves and have considered them in the past. My reasoning for never buying them is a) Chicago coach house - no basement, no garage, limited storage, and, b) my wife hates seeing ‘fish crap everywhere’ - a category which salty gloves hanging out to dry would definitely fall under. Also, the thickness of the coralife’s make them seem, as you mentioned, a bit clumsy. These disposables are thin, so you can feel what you’re doing a little better than through rubber i’d imagine - there is a little clumsy factor, sure, but not too bad.

Most of the time, I do stick my bare hands in the tank after a nice rinse in hot water. But when no time for that, these are the ticket.
