I bought this shrimp (Lysmata kuekenthali) at the LFS on Saturday and can find next to no information on them, aside from a nice post on a Norwegian forum and a site in German. I haven’t yet attempted to learn any of the languages spoken on the Scandinavian peninsula yet, and my German is limited, so I used an online translator to decipher as much as possible. This Putergarnele originates from an import of the company Tropical Live import, Menden in the sour country. Appears not very shy and is difficult nich to keep. Adapt to shrimps particularly well and slowly to the new water, since this to density variations are somewhat more sensitive than other animals…
We hold a pair in the shrimp basin. We are not us united whether this kind of shrimp is suitable for a society basin actually, since we could observe already several times that they tore and ate whole Tentakeln from the Quadricolors. Because of hunger it cannot have been.
We get the Lysmata kueckenthali regular from the Philippines Dr. Thomas Heeger Cebu. After customer information this shrimp eats also from glass roses.
From what I gather elsewhere, it is one of the 25 species of cleaner shrimps in the Lysmata genus, comes from East Asia, and is kind of a Pacific version of the Peppermint Shrimp (Lysmata wurdemanni). It is almost twice the size of my Peppermints, and it is way more aggressive than my peps or skunk cleaner – not so much aggressive towards tank mates, it seems as calm as any cleaner, but as soon as the scent of food hits the water, this guys goes nuts. Hopefully I can find some more information on it. If not, I have a cool new shrimp I’ve never seen in any LFS before.

What has it been dining on? Pretty good photo … I haven’t seen anything like it in any of the LFS near MarineDepot.com’s headquarters. How large is it?

Eats whatever I toss in, great scavenger – mornings I feed lightly, pellets or spirulina flakes. Evenings, Rod’s Food or Formula 1 frozen. Goes nuts for Rod’s Food, but I have yet to keep something that doesn’t.
It’s about 2 or 2.25 inches, and has some interesting colors, especially on it’s back, right behind the head. I had to lighten the photo a bit top bring them out. Shitty camera, what can you do.
LFS is Old Town Aquarium (.com if so inclined to visit) here in Chicago – they tend to bring in some very cool, out of the ordinary, fish & inverts from time to time, freshwater and salt. I’ve yet to see this shrimp on any of the major livestock sites (liveaquaria.com, marinedepotlive.com, etc…). I did find some info on some European sites (UK, Germany, Norway & Spain), but it seems to be a seasonal specimen, and not readily available.
